Steps Of An Allergic Reaction

  • step 1: exposure to allergenic food proteins (e.g. through eating, inhalation etc.) 
  • step 2: allergenic protein triggers production of the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE) and activates mast cells 
  • step 3: IgE attaches to mast cells
  • step 4: cells release histamine and heparin, which causes swelling or itching
